Evergreen Speedway Sees 40 Laps of Green
Prosser, Washington, Pro4 veteran Steve Thompson put his
outlaw Impala under Troy Blanton’s checkered flag to win the
JZ Motorsports Part’s and Fabrication 40 at the beautiful
Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA. S. Thompson used his
Ford horsepower and what was left of his Hoosier Tires to
make a late race charge on the Bellevue Auto Sport Fast Time
driver and track record holder, Eddie Secord of Oak Hills,
California, to slide by on the high side and score the win.
Secord would take home second ahead of Puyallup,
Washington’s John Grosvenor and Tacoma, Washington’s
Jeff Jones; and, rounding out the top five was Prosser,
Washington’s Rick Thompson.
The Evergreen Speedway weekend actually started on
Friday, July 8th with the Evergreen Speedway FanFare event
held in downtown Monroe. Race teams from all of the
motorsports classes and tours that would compete during
the three days of fun and race action showed up to visit with
the fans. Live music, tasty food and vendors of all kinds took
part in what Evergreen Speedway General Manager and
promoter, Doug Hobbs, hopes to become an annual event.
The Pro4 teams of Ken Chandler, Rob Taylor and Eric Kaas all took part by setting up static
displays of their race cars, signing autographs, and handing out photo cards to the fans
(kids and adults) all afternoon.
The Northwest Pro4 Alliance also played host to Tracy Shaw, the regional director for
Wishing Star, by providing space and set up assistance for a fundraiser raffle of very
“sweet” bicycle. The Alliance was first introduced to the Wishing Star organization through
Wishing Star’s involvement with the #99 Pro4 team of driver CJ Hawley. CJ is 15 years old
and is in his rookie season with the Alliance. CJ wanted to support a cause that gave from
the heart, and his choice was Wishing Star.
With NASCAR in town the Alliance would only get a couple of practice sessions, so the key
thing was to find the right gear ratio for what appeared to be a “super speedway” for Pro4
late models. The findings would come as a huge loss for Terry Kaas and driver Eric, as a
broken rod ended their night.
The second practice saw Johnny Rumsey
spin and collect the championship points
leader, Rob Powers, in a huge crash.
Powers and Rumsey both took advantage
of the three and a half hours of K&N West
Series practice to rebuild their cars and go
on to race in the JZ Motorsports 40. Fast
Eddie Secord would claim the Bellevue
Auto Sports Fast Time Award, only to draw
a 12-car invert for the JZ Motorsports 40,
placing none other than Rob Powers in
the #6 on the pole.

Rob Powers, in the rebuilt Mike Bailey owned Ford Taurus out of Meridian, Idaho, would
start on the pole position and take the early lead in what seemed to be a Cinderella story in
development; but soon, the battered race car would begin to suffer from the early day
damage, and on lap 10 Secord would move by and take the lead. Boise driver Ken Chandler
took a shot at the lead, but Secord fought back to keep the point. Jeff Jones of Tacoma,
Washington, and Prosser, Washington’s Rick Thompson, battled the whole event, while
racing could be found all over the 5/8 mile track. Thomas Husk of Bonners Ferry, Idaho,
moved past the cars of Ross Jones and Scott Raver, in action toward the back of the pack.
Meridian, Idaho, rookie contender Rob Taylor was up front and running very well, as was
John Jackson of Lewiston, Idaho, and Terry Rennick of Salem, Oregon. Casualties included
Chandler, who was forced into early departure with a broken flywheel; Othello, Washington,
rookie driver CJ Hawley with battery issues; Tom Keehan with a blown motor; and Greg
Hector with unknown problems, leaving 21 cars to finish the race. With two laps to go, Steve
Thompson of Prosser, Washington, passed Secord and drove on to take the win. Coming
home third was Puyallup, Washington, driver John Grosvenor. The JZ Motorsports 40 ran
laps of green flag racing, taking only 31 minutes and 15 seconds to complete from the time
they rolled onto the track.
